Our specialty is caring for homes on the Big Island while their owners are away. After having been in business for over 15 years, we know a thing or two about what to do when leaving your home for extended periods. From ourselves as well as the clients we serve, here are our top 3 tips for leaving your home unattended for extended periods…

SAFETY FIRST! – GET LIGHT TIMERS

Light timers are an inexpensive way to add a level of security to your home. These devices are available in many retail stores and act as a medium between your lamp and the socket. They can be easily set to turn your lights on at prescribed times. This keeps wood-be bad guys on their toes if eyeing your house.

SAVE MONEY – TURN OF APPLIANCES WITH STAND BY POWER

Many appliances in your house use standby power. Unplug all minor appliances and shut major appliances like the dishwasher off at the breaker. It’s even worth cleaning out the fridge and shutting that down as well.

KEEP IT RUNNING – FIND A FRIEND

If you’re not fortunate enough to have a service like ours in your area, have a friend stop by every other week to run the plumbing and check for leaks. Most appliances that are connected to your plumbing have seals that need to stay moist. Additionally, if the plumbing is not used pests can enter through this medium. Your friend could also check the mail if he’s nice enough.
